Whitewashed and sat against the hill in Great Salkeld, The Highland Drove is named for the cattle that once moved south through this valley. Today it's known for its kitchen — game in season, locally reared lamb, and a wine list that punches well above a village pub.
The story
Whitewashed and set hard against the hill in Great Salkeld, The Highland Drove takes its name from the Scottish cattle that once moved south down the Eden Valley toward the markets at Brough Hill and Appleby.
Today it's known for its kitchen as much as its bar. Game in season — partridge, grouse, venison from the surrounding estates — locally reared Cumbrian lamb, fish brought down from the Solway, and a wine list that punches well above a village pub.
The dining room upstairs looks out over the rooftops to the Pennines; the bar below keeps a fire that runs from October to April and a short list of cask ales from local breweries.
