Eighteen rooms in a turreted Victorian villa on the hill above Keswick. The drawing room looks south over Derwentwater; dinner is taken in the conservatory. Walks from the door — Walla Crag, Cat Bells, the lakeshore path into town.
The story
Built in 1880 for a Manchester cotton merchant, Highfield is a turreted Victorian villa on The Heads — the row of grand houses set on the hill above Keswick, looking south down Derwentwater to Catbells and the Newlands fells.
The drawing room and conservatory both face the lake. Eighteen rooms sit above, each different in shape and outlook — some with the original cast-iron fireplaces, the larger ones with bay windows looking straight onto the water.
Walks begin at the door: down to the lakeshore in ten minutes, up Walla Crag in an hour, on to Cat Bells, Causey Pike or Skiddaw if the weather holds. Dinner is taken in the conservatory, and the kitchen carries an AA Rosette for a reason.
